Hanging a TV on the wall has many advantages. First and foremost, it saves a lot of space in your living room, bedroom or kitchen. No need for a voluminous TV unit, which also means, with your TV fixed on the wall, it won’t sit too close to your eyes.

Hanging a television is particularly important if you have toddlers, as an accident can easily happen with a TV within arms’ reach just standing atop a unit. That also means you better be confident in your handy skills if you’re thinking ‘I want to hang my TV myself’. So if you’re better at watching TV than installing it on the wall, we recommend hiring a local experienced Tasker to securely hang up your television and sound system on the wall.

Step 1 – Find the right spot for your TV

How far should I sit from the TV? Manufacturers recommend sitting at a distance to the TV equivalent to 2 times the TV’s diagonal screen size.

If your TV is:

  • 42 inches…you should sit 2.1m away
  • 50 inches…you should sit 2.5m away
  • 55 inches…you should sit 2.8m away
  • 65 inches…you should sit 3.3m away
  • 75 inches…you should sit 3.8m away

Once you find the perfect place for your TV, make sure that it doesn’t sit too far from power outlets and your cable or internet connections.

Step 2 – Be equipped with the right tools to hang up a tv

If you’re feeling brave and want to do it yourself, you’ll need the following:

  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Stud finder (for drywall)
  • TV brackets – it’s not a one size fits all situation here. So buy it with your TV if it can be included or shop for the ones recommended by the manufacturer based on the size of your TV.

Step 3 – Install the TV brackets

Wondering how to install a TV bracket? Well it all depends on the type of wall you choose to hang your TV. Concrete or brick walls will always be a much safer and easier choice than drywall or plasterboard.

  • (If you have a drywall only) Locate the vertical wood or metal studs, as this is where you’ll need to secure the bracket. Do not hang a TV on drywall alone. Use a stud finder to locate the studs if they are made out of metal. If they are made out of wood, simply knock on the wall until you hear a sound that feels less hollow, and mark it with a pencil.
  • Hold the wall bracket where you’d like to install it, use a level to ensure your TV will not be crooked and mark down where each screw and anchor will go.
  • Drill the holes, place the anchors, then install the bracket with the screws
  • Use the level again now the TV bracket is placed
  • Test the solidity of your wall bracket by gently trying to shake it. If it moves, even a little, tighten a bit more.
  • Hang your TV and tadaa!

Step 4 – Hide the TV cables

To keep the area neat and not looking like a google data center, invest in masking tape or self adhesive PVC trunking cables, and paint it the same colour as your wall.
