However, with the right tools and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preparation, the process is quite straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to find out everything you need to know about how to lay stair carpet, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019ll be a pro in no time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re fitting a stair runner, you can also follow the instructions below. Just make <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sure that the carpet grippers are the right length so that you can get a neat finish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Tools and Materials<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you start laying stair carpet, you\u2019ll need to make sure you have all the right <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equipment to hand. You will need:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carpet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharp utility knife<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tape measure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hammer stapler<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carpet staples<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carpet grippers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knee kicker<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Familiarising yourself with the correct terminology for the different parts of the stair <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will make reading this guide a lot easier, too. Here are the terms you\u2019ll need to know:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tread: The part of the step that you tread on.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riser: The vertical part of the step that joins it to the next one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nose: The part of the step that overhangs the riser (not all stairs have a<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nose).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Method<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3>Step 1: Remove old carpet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you begin, you\u2019ll need to remove any old carpet from the stairs. Get rid of old <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlay, tacks, staples and anything else left on the stairs, and give them a good <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sweep to remove any debris.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Measure stairs<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next it\u2019s time to measure your stairs. We recommend measuring one individual step <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the back of the tread to the bottom of the riser, allowing for any extra space if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the tread overhangs the riser.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add at least an inch onto this measurement, then multiply it by the number of steps. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, you might decide to measure each individual step and then add up all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the measurements. Since it\u2019s possible for some steps to be slightly different sizes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is a fail-safe option.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Cut carpet to size<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut your carpet to size using a sharp utility knife. Don\u2019t rush this step, since you don\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want to end up with a strip of carpet that is too wide or too narrow at one end.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 4: Fit carpet grippers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Position the carpet grippers at the back of each tread, with the angled edge facing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">away. You\u2019ll also need to place them at the base of each riser, with the angled edge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing down this time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Install them on every step except the bottom one, and leave a 10mm gap between <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the carpet grippers and the bottom of the risers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 5: Staple carpet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting from the bottom step, staple the carpet to the riser. Make sure that the pile is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facing down the stairs, so that it doesn\u2019t get rubbed the wrong way when you walk on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pull the carpet up and over the first step. Use the knee kicker to stretch the carpet so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that it doesn\u2019t become uneven later on. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Push the carpet firmly into the gap between the carpet grippers to create a snug fit. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your steps have a nose that overhangs the riser, you\u2019ll need to staple the carpet <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just under the nose so that it fits the stairs properly. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeat this process until you reach the top of the stairs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 6: Trim carpet<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staple the carpet to the top of the last riser and trim it off neatly. Pull the landing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carpet down over the edge of the top stair.
