It\u2019s a pre-drilled hole made where you\u2019ll be placing your item<\/span>. It<span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> helps to ensure a smooth entrance for the screw, prevents any cracking of the wall, and in some cases, helps the mounter actually see into the wall to understand the stud and wall type.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">According to Nick, pilot holes should be considered for most hard surfaces, and the pilot hole should be as large as the screw\u2019s minor diameter. For softer wood, the pilot hole may not be mandatory. Drilling a pilot hole is, in some cases, one of the first steps to securely mounting an item to a wall\u2019s surface. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Drilling into walls<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Knowing your wall type is essential in understanding what kind of tools will help you successfully complete a Mounting task<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight:400;\">and for knowing what to expect throughout the drilling experience. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.co.uk\/blog\/mounting-105-know-your-wall-types\">Mounting 105: know your wall types<\/a> article for more info before you start drilling pilot holes. <\/span>Here are Nick\u2019s pilot hole tips for each wall type<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Plasterboard:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> The initial drilling should go straight through and the wall won\u2019t be too flaky.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Lath &amp; plaster: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Will be flaky when drilled into and creates more dust. <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Concrete:&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You&#8217;ll need a hammer drill and special drill bits.<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Want more info? In order to mount on brick and masonry, Nick recommends having a concrete drill bit.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Breeze block:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Falls into the masonry category, and in some cases, a heavy duty wall plug can be used for this. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-coblocks-dynamic-separator is-style-line\" style=\"height:50px\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">If you are ever in doubt about the wall type before drilling, ask your client. If the client isn\u2019t sure, you can suggest that they ask the building manager, if it wouldn\u2019t be too much trouble. It\u2019s always helpful to be fully confident of the wall type before mounting.
