According to Nick, finding studs correctly is vital to avoid:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Drilling into a water pipe <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Damaging electrical wiring<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Mounting an item into plasterboard only\u2014and cause it to fall and break<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Understanding different wall types is the first step to finding the stud in the wall and knowing what kind of wall plug you might need, if any. For more information on all wall types, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taskrabbit.co.uk\/blog\/mounting-105-know-your-wall-types\/\">Mounting 105: know your wall types<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Steel studs<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increasingly more common but most likely to be found in high-rise (&gt;3 stories) apartment buildings and offices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">More difficult to mount onto because they are thin and can buckle with heavier objects.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Each steel stud is roughly the same size as a wood stud. Plasterboard is screwed directly to the studs.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Steel studs are generally placed 24 inches (60cm) apart (although it never hurts to check at 16 inches too).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Plasterboard screws (light duty) and <\/span>heavy duty wall plugs. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Lath and plaster<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Usually found in residential buildings built in the mid-twentieth century or earlier.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Have wooden studs and wooden lath running between the studs (parallel to the floor and ceiling).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Stud finders often won\u2019t work because the plaster layer is thicker than modern plasterboard. To find the studs beneath lath and plaster walls, you\u2019ll have to get a stud finder with metal-detecting capabilities. These will indicate where the nails are connecting the wooden laths to the studs\u2014and show you where to screw in your mounting brackets. Plaster can crumble easily so be extra careful when drilling!<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Screws or bolts can go into the studs, wall plugs for heavier application where no stud is located.<\/span> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Brick, concrete, and stone<\/b>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some wall types that fall into this category: fireplaces, cement office buildings, industrial lofts. Usually, you\u2019ll know when you see it!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Both <\/span><b>brick <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">and <\/span><b>concrete<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> are wall types that are not formed around studs. These walls are very hard and require that you be prepared with special tools, including:<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Metal screw wall plugs and metal screws.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">A hammer drill.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Masonry bits with the right diameter to fit the metal screw wall plugs.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Eye and ear protection.<\/span>  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>If your stud finder fails&#8230;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Tasker <a href=\"https:\/\/tr.co\/nicholas-c--34\">Nick C<\/a>. says that certain studded wall types, particularly lath and plaster, won\u2019t work with a stud finder. So, what\u2019s a Tasker to do? First&#8230;don\u2019t fret! You have a few backup options for finding the stud.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Know your spacing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Studs are usually spaced <\/span><b>16 inches (40 cm) apart on centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">, meaning the centre of one stud is 16 inches away from the centre of the next stud. Beware that some homes do have <\/span><b>24 inch (60 cm) on centre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> stud spacing, but this is mostly the case for older homes and is pretty rare. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Knock on the wall. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You\u2019ll be able to hear a dull thud when you\u2019re knocking on a wall over a stud, and more of an echoing sound when not. This works well to find out general stud location, but <\/span><b>not<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> for exact placement!<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Get a magnet!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> A magnet slowly moved up, down and side to side across a wall can locate the screws used to fasten the plasterboard or lath to the studs. Find these screws and you\u2019ve found your stud<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Finding studs and placing hardware: <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Tasker <a href=\"https:\/\/tr.co\/nicholas-c--34\">Nick C. <\/a>has listed the basic steps he takes when finding studs:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Use your stud finder! Run it slowly in a horizontal direction along the wall until it signals. Mark this spot. Starting on the other side, run the stud finder horizontally towards the mark you made on the wall. When it beeps, mark the wall. Your stud is between these two marks<\/span>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Remember, studs should be 1 \u00bd inches (4cm) wide. If the distance between the marks you made is larger than this, pull your stud finder out again.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">When drilling into the wall, go slowly. Plasterboard is quite easy to drill through, but when you\u2019ve made it through the plasterboard you don\u2019t want to drill into anything unexpected.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">If you\u2019re using a wall plug that expands into the wall, make sure you use a drill bit significantly smaller than the <\/span>wall plug<span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. You can always increase the size of the hole, but it\u2019s way harder to deal with once it\u2019s too wide.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You don\u2019t always have to mount into a stud, particularly if the object is not too heavy. Even heavier items can often be safely hung with heavy duty wall plugs. But if you have the option to use a stud you should consider taking it.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>If finding the studs remains problematic:<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">\u201cEarning trust is one of the most important steps in building your business on Taskrabbit,\u201d Nick says. \u201cThe client trusts that you are the expert of this task, and therefore qualified to make judgment calls based on the situation at hand. That being said, it\u2019s also your job as the Tasker to make sure the client understands what you\u2019ll be doing, and is updated on any changes to that plan.\u201d Here\u2019s what Nick does when he runs into unforeseen circumstances:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Take precautions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Protect yourself, your business and your client\u2019s home. If your stud finder is detecting something that is not a stud in the wall, be sure to understand what it is before drilling.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Understand the building: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">In case of mystery items behind the wall, and if the client is present, do not be afraid to ask a few scoping questions about the wall. For example, find out what room is on the other side of the wall. If it\u2019s a bathroom or kitchen, that could mean pipes\u2013which you would definitely want to avoid.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Reschedule<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. Don\u2019t be afraid to reschedule a task with your client if your stud finder is not working properly, or you are unable to find the answers you need about the wall. The client would most likely prefer to have the task postponed than a bunch of unnecessary holes in their wall.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Get the proper tools to help you find the stud<\/b><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">. It\u2019s always best to come back another day with working tools than to risk drilling into a pipe.
