Preparing guest rooms for the holidays

14/12/2022

There’s real joy in setting up your spare room for ultimate guest comfort, from hotel-standard bedding to relaxing colour palettes. As the festive season approaches, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite guest room decor ideas that’ll have your friends and family feeling right at home when they come to visit.

10 guest bedroom ideas

Bed

Start with a comfortable bed

Spare rooms are often kitted out with old, worn out mattresses that have survived many house moves. Go the extra mile and make sure your guests get a good night’s sleep during the holidays by replacing your old mattress with something more comfortable. If you can’t afford to buy a new bed, opt for a mattress topper instead to provide that extra bit of comfort.

Leave room for storage

It can be tempting to use your guest room to store out-of-season clothes or lesser used items, but leaving space for your guests to unpack and get comfortable can help them feel extra welcome and relaxed. Make sure there’s hanging and drawer space available, and tidy away anything that you wouldn’t normally see in a hotel room, like toys or trinkets.

Keep it well lit

Thoughtful lighting can have a big impact on a guest room. Make sure it’s easy to turn lights on and off from bed to avoid your guests having to stumble around in the dark after a mulled wine or two. Well designed bedside lights can add a touch of style to the room too, and a good reading light over a chair or desk is an extra bonus.

Think about seating

If there’s enough space in your guest room for some seating, then a comfy armchair is a welcome addition. This gives your guests the option of curling up with a good book or enjoying some downtime between holiday activities without having to sit on the bed.

Provide your guests with drinking water

A carafe or water bottle is a great accessory to add to your guest room. Making it easy for your guests to stay hydrated, especially during all the festivities, is a simple but thoughtful way to help them feel extra comfortable.

Provide a place to work and wrap gifts

Whilst we all try our best to switch off during the festive season, there’s inevitably an email here or there that needs attention. Setting up a clear surface to work from, either a desk or dressing table with a small chair, can make it easy for your guests to keep on top of things from the comfort of their room. It makes a great space for gift wrapping too, so you could even provide scissors, tape, pens, paper and gift wrap to use.

Don’t forget the basics

Towels, comfortable bed linen, blankets, a mirror and a hairdryer are all essentials to include in any guest room, as well as access to an iron and ironing board. If you fancy adding a bit of extra luxury for your guests this holiday season, then fluffy robes, hot water bottles and slippers are a lovely treat.

Help your guests stay connected

The festive season is a time for staying in touch with loved ones, so make it as easy as possible for your guests to stay connected by writing down your wifi password and leaving it on the bedside table.

Set the tone

Providing a small digital radio or bluetooth speaker is another great way for guests to feel at home. Even better, choose one with a smartphone charger built-in so they can easily recharge.

Provide entertainment

Providing a TV in your guest room is a lovely addition for your visitors to enjoy. Remember to leave the controller by the bed so it’s easy for them to turn it on and off. If it’s hooked up to streaming services like Netflix, then leave a note next to the controller with login instructions.
